Health and environmental officials in Rhode Island are warning people to stay away from certain rivers, ponds and reservoirs in East Providence because of potentially toxic algae blooms.

The departments of Health and Environmental Management are asking people to stay away from Central Pond, Turner Reservoir, Omega Pond, and a portion of the Ten Mile River from Turner Reservoir to Omega Pond.

"All recreation, including swimming, fishing, boating and kayaking, should be avoided. People should not ingest water or eat fish from these waters. Pets can also be affected by exposure to the toxins and thus owners should not allow pets to drink or swim in the water," a news release said.

Blue-green algae blooms can produce toxins that are harmful to people and animals.

"Skin contact with water containing blue-green algae commonly causes irritation of the skin, nose, eyes, and/or throat. Common health effects associated with ingesting water containing algal toxins include stomach ache, diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea. Rarer health effects include dizziness, headache, fever, liver damage, and nervous system damage," the release said.

Anyone who touches the water should wash their skin with clean water immediately and then take a shower and wash their clothes. Pets that come in contact with the water should also be washed with clean water as soon as possible.

The advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
