Storm Ciara whips up a storm on Cleveleys Promenade

Strong winds again whipped up the surf off the Fylde coast creating the soap-like phenomenon.

Police closed some stretches of the promenade as gale force winds continued to batter the coast after Sunday's onslaught.

Met Office weather warnings are still in place as further wintry conditions are forecast for the area.

The Met Office tweeted, that “Whilst #StormCiara is clearing away, it will remain unsettled with further strong winds, heavy showers, some snow and ice.”

The foam phenomenon in Cleveleys is caused by natural minerals in the water, including algae.

When the algae starts decaying you get something called ‘algal bloom’, which is whipped up by the strong winds.

Wednesday (12 Feb) has a yellow weather warning from snow and ice in place from 12am to 12pm, covering East Midlands, North East England, North West England, Northern Ireland, West Midlands, Yorkshire & Humber.

The Met Office said: “Further snow showers are likely on Wednesday morning. These are likely to lead to further accumulations of a few cm of snow over ground above around 150 metres.

Storm Dennis is now forecast to bring further unsettled conditions this weekend.

Steve Ramsdale, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office said: “Another spell of very wet and windy ​weather is expected for Saturday, although Storm Dennis is currently not expected to be as severe as Ciara disruption is still likely.
