Stranded humpback whale near Seattle ferry dock dies

A humpback whale died Sunday after being stranded near Seattle, KING-TV reported.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) officials tried to rescue the juvenile humpback, which was stranded near a ferry dock, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

A local news blog said that the young whale was in very shallow water and was heard trying to breathe. Volunteers were guarding the beach and using buckets to keep the whale hydrated after the tide went out.

The whale was pronounced dead around 11 a.m. local time.

Authorities are investigating to find out why the whale was stranded, and how to move the whale from the area.
