SWIMMERS at Tudor Grange Leisure Centre have raised concerns concerning algae in the pool.
The Observer has been told the green algae was spotted growing on the tiles and on the surface of the 25metre pool at the Blossomfield Road site.
There is no health risk associated with the algae in the water due to ongoing treatments, according to Tudor Grange Leisure Centre.
One swimmer told The Observer they had noticed the algae growing in the pool for at least four weeks.
They added: “When I’ve gone to swim I’ve noticed green algae all over the tiles and the surface of the pool edge near the walls has been green.”
Wayne Desmond, Everyone Active general manager at Tudor Grange Leisure Centre, said: “On very hot days, like those experienced recently, sunlight coming in through the skylight above the pool can cause small amounts of algae to form.
“Although unsightly, the algae poses absolutely no risk to health and safety as there are treatments already present in the water to address it.
“Our duty managers will be checking the pool every morning to remove any algae, in addition to the automated cleaning programme that vacuums the pool every night.
“We have also recently purchased an algaecide treatment to prevent algae forming during particularly hot weather, as well as new cleaning equipment that makes it possible to clean all areas of the pool while it is in use.”
Everyone Active took on the management of Tudor Grange Leisure Centre and North Solihull Sports Centre last June.
Just five months later the pools closed for what Solihull Council chiefs branded as “essential maintenance works” and reopened in March.
Before the works were carried out the council said the project aimed to resolve an ongoing issue with the poolside tiling and it would carry out a number of other upgrades on all three pools.
