The Thames dolphin has died after becoming beached in Wandsworth.

It’s believed the dolphin got into difficulty near Wandworth Bridge before becoming beached on a foreshore of the river.

The Metropolitan Police’s Marine Policing Unit confirmed that the dolphin had washed up dead.

Its body will be examined by marine experts at the Zoological Society of London to determine exactly why the dolphin was found in fresh water.

The MPS have also requested that eagle-eyed Londoners and tourists keep an eye out for other dolphins in the Thames and report sighting so they can be saved from the same fate.

They tweeted: ‘Sad to tell you that a dead Common #Dolphin was washed up on the foreshore at Wandsworth yesterday.

‘Our friends at @ZSLMarine will carry out tests to determine why it was in fresh water. There may be others so keep an eye out & report any sightings.’

The dolphin was initially spotted over a week ago, with sightings reported close to Westminster, Richmond, Putney Bridge and Kew.
