Unusual Mortality Event declared for bottlenose dolphins in the Northern Gulf of Mexico

NOAA is hosting a media teleconference today to discuss the unusual mortality event (UME) declared for the elevated bottlenose dolphin strandings in the Northern Gulf of Mexico including Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the panhandle of Florida east through Franklin County.
Common bottlenose dolphins are found throughout the world in both offshore and coastal waters, including harbors, bays, gulfs, and estuaries of temperate and tropical waters.

More than 260 dolphins have stranded since February 1, 2019, through May, which is approximately 3 times higher than the average.
