FORT MYERS, Fla. (WFLA) – The Coast Guard rescued a dolphin that reportedly jumped out of the water and landed on a boat Thursday in Back Bay.

USCG watchstanders received a call around 1 a.m. The caller said he just saw a 7-foot dolphin jump out of the water and land on the dinghy he had attached to his sailboat.

The Coast Guard crew consulted a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission marine biologist and they determined that the mammal needed to be placed right back into the water.

USCG response boat responded to the sailboat and helped put the dolphin back.

“I am proud of the close coordination between our crews and the professionals at FWC,” said Chief Warrant Officer Robert Gruschow, commanding officer of Station Fort Myers Beach. “Through this coordination we were able to save another life.”
