VIDEO: Minke whale rescued off Wellfleet

WELLFLEET
– Wellfleet PD was on hand to assist IFAW and the Harbormaster staff with the rescue of an approximate 22’ foot Minke Whale earlier today. This am we received a report of the whale in shallow water and advised our partners at IFAW whom rallied their support staff.

Wellfleet PD assisted with traffic, crowd control and assisting the staff in the efforts to help the Whale. After a period of time the whale was directed towards deeper waters.

Initially the whale was floated on floats in hope of towing it out past the breakwater. While this was initially successful, it didn’t work as the whale came off the floats. Fortunately the tide was coming in and the whale was able to swim on its own. Boats were able to help direct the whale towards deeper water and eventually pass the breakwater.
