WATCH: Humpback Whale Swims Through Cape Cod Canal

Authorities closed off some of the waters around the Cape Cod Canal to protect a humpback whale passing through.

WAREHAM, MA — An "unexpected" visitor swam through the Cape Cod Canal Thursday, according to the Wareham Department of Natural Resources. A humpback whale navigated the canal between Onset Island and the Hog Island Channel. The DNR and the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers provided security for the whale and closed the area off to boats.

"This was highly unusual for the area but anything is always possible!" the DNR said in a statement.

Officials lost sight of the whale once it swam toward Buzzards Bay. See video of the rare sighting below:
