Wally the Whale Makes a Return to Dana Point: Towed back out to Sea. Again.

A 45-ft humpback whale carcass has become a royal nuisance to the Orange County coastline to the bane of Lifeguards and Sheriff's officers.

Dana Point, CA--In a return appearance that promises to be a big stink for all concerned, Wally the Whale--a humpback whale carcass who has been floating around the Pacific Ocean for numerous months--made his return to Dana Point today.

With recent shark sightings in the area, the Orange County Life Guards and Orange County Sheriff's office want nothing to do with having the whale reach the area beaches.

On July 2, authorities towed the carcass of Wally, a humpback whale that washed ashore at Dockweiler State Beach and created a smell and spectacle just before the holiday weekend, out to sea. Since then, he's been spotted most recently inNewport Beach.

The 45' whale was towed back out to sea, ten miles from shore according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

Carrie Braun of Orange County Sheriff's Department stated that sheriff's deputies went out on a fireboat and -- using a tow lines already attached to the carcass -- pulled it about 10 miles out to sea.

It took the crew about about three-and-a-half hours to haul the whale before returning to shore, she said.

The trick is finding a location that lifeguards hope doesn't lead the carcass to drift back into another jurisdiction or interfere with shipping lanes.

The whale was originally named Wally by biologists who were tracking its movements along the coast, although they later realized it was female. They opted not to change the name.
