A warning has been issued after green algae has been spotted at a popular lake in Lincolnshire.

North Kesteven District Council is warning people and dog walkers to avoid the water at Millennium Lake in North Hykeham after the discovery was made.

It has been reported to the Environment Agency and signs will be erected to warn people, officials have said.

A spokesperson for the authority said: “We’re aware that green algae has developed in the water at Millennium Lake in North Hykeham.

The Environment Agency has been contacted

“We’ve reported it to the Environment Agency and will work with them to monitor the situation.

“People must not swim in lakes at any time for a number of safety reasons – and especially now it’s important you don’t enter the water at all, as types of algae can make you and any pets who do so ill.

“We’ll be installing signage as an additional precaution.”
