Whale spotted Cape Cod harbor dies
An 18-foot whale spotted in a Chatham harbor Thursday afternoon has died, officials said. The body of the Minke whale was found washed ashore along the Oyster River, according to the Chatham Harbormaster. The whale, approximately 18-20 feet long, likely swam into Stage Harbor from Nantucket sound and was first seen around daybreak Thursday.It stranded numerous times on the sand during low tide and had scrapes on its body, particularly on its dorsal fin, from swimming under docks and piers in the area, officials said.Members of the the International Fund for Animal Welfare tried to guide the whale out of the harbor, but attempts were unsuccessful.
