The World's Deepest Pool Has a 'Sunken City' to Explore

Ready to go for a really deep swim? Deep Dive Dubai, the deepest swimming pool in the world, invites you to jump right in.

Verified by Guinness World Records as the world's deepest pool, Deep Dive Dubai goes down to 60 meters (about 197 feet) and contains 14 million liters (roughly 3.7 million gallons) of water. That's just shy of six Olympic-sized swimming pools.

"Deep Dive Dubai allows thrill-seekers to dive inwards and discover a new underwater dimension filled with adventure and wonder," Abdulla Bin Habtoor, spokesperson for Deep Dive Dubai, shared in a statement after the Guinness accreditation in 2021. "We offer an unparalleled experience with year-round diving, in a safe environment, with outstanding instructors and services."

The pool is located in the neighborhood of Nad Al Sheba, south of Dubai Creek. It's shaped like a giant oyster, a nod to the history of pearl diving in the Persian Gulf, and features the latest technology for divers, including the region's most advanced hyperbaric chamber, a state-of-the-art lighting, sound, and mood system, and an intense filtration system that uses NASA technology, volcanic rock, and UV radiation to circulate the water every six hours.

Inside the pool, you get to explore the intricacies of a "sunken city" with "abandoned" apartment buildings, an underwater arcade, submerged automobiles and musical instruments, and more.

Bin Habtoor said the Deep Dive Dubai team "hope[s] to embody the determination of Emirati explorers and innovators, both past and present, as well as provide a platform for future achievements and discoveries."

The pool attracts free divers, scuba divers, and snorkelers alike with programming that caters to a range of ages and experience levels. Beginners can take introductory free diving, scuba, and snorkeling courses, while certified divers can sign up for a guided dive to the depths of the pool. Essential equipment is provided, so don't worry about checking diving gear on your flight.

There are also programs for kids and on-land activities such as a facility tour. Visitors can browse gear and gifts in the on-site shop and get a glimpse of what's under the water through large windows and video screens.
