Westport Library Studies Whales with Drones

Westport Library and the Friends of Sherwood Island will explain a new method of collecting biological samples from whales on August 31.

Join The Westport Library and the Friends of Sherwood Island for a program about a revolutionary new method of collecting biological samples from whales using drones on Wednesday, August 31, from 1-4 pm at the Sherwood Island Nature Center. Register online. Your printed copy of the registration will serve as your free entry to Sherwood Island State Park for the program, courtesy of The Westport Library’s Innovation Fund.

Dr. Iain Kerr, CEO of the Ocean Alliance, a global leader in whale research and conservation since 1970 when it was founded as the Long Term Research Institute, will give a presentation of the invention called Snotbot and how it is transforming the way whales are studied. Immediately following, the Ocean Alliance will conduct a live demonstration of the Snotbot in action using 3D printed blowholes on the Country Squires Modelers Airfield at Sherwood Island. Light refreshments will be served, courtesy of the Friends of Sherwood Island.
