Wildlife officials worked Saturday to rescue a small injured whale that became stranded near Ponce Inlet, but were unfortunately unsuccessful.Volusia County Beach Rescue officials said the 10 to 12-foot whale became beached about 1:30 p.m.Experts from the Marine Science Center, Marine Mammal Team and SeaWorld, along with volunteers spent the afternoon trying to keep the whale shaded and wet.Beach officials said late Saturday afternoon that the whale did not survive. A necropsy will be performed, officials said.
