Marine experts say it’s likely more close encounters will occur.

“The likelihood of an animal being struck by a boat and someone being injured is obviously on the rise,” Adam Northam, from Queensland Marine Parks, said.

Under current Queensland laws, boats can’t approach within 100 metres of whales, and jet skis 300m.

“What you are required to do is disengage your engine, you can leave it in neutral and that way you can have a great interaction with that whale.”

Brad Nicholls from Gold Coast Adventures, said he fears someone could be seriously injured by not obeying the whale watching laws.

“These things weigh up to 40 tonnes. If one of those came down on one of these tinnies or jet skis that got close to it, they’ve got no hope,” he said.

The identity of the jet ski rider still remains unknown.

Authorities have confirmed they are investigating the deliberate act.
