Several unusual sea creatures have also appeared from the depth of the deep blue following the quake – which killed six people and injured more than 120.

Some people have suggested the beast – which was found on the shore of the island’s Cagdianao province – may be Appa, a fictional character from the Nickelodeon animated TV series Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Austin Blanch‏ tweeted : “Think it's Appa. Or a big Shitzu. I could be wrong.”

BIZARRE: Scientists say it could be a decomposing whale which has turned white

While another Twitter user, J Flow, said: “It's that creature from The NeverEnding Story.”

But according to local scientists the beast is probably the decomposing remains of a 20ft whale carcass.

The body of the whale, which weighs approximately 2,000kg, is believed to have turned white due to an advanced stage of decomposition.

The animal is thought to have died around two weeks ago, possibly after being hit by a ship.
