Onion's Ode

From the Onion board
Nan Bowles - Jan '96
Onion where do you come from?
Where do you go?
you must have a story to tell,
Though a sad one,
As to the shape of your fin.
The shape of your fin that makes you, You
Oh, there's a bulbous cut.
Why an Onion is a bulb.

You are a true creature of grace.
You have muscle fibers in your tail
That are interwoven as delicately and precisely
To give you your powerful, powerful tail.
A powerful tail that gives you the ability
To swim against the current
A tail powerful enough
To propel you fast, fast
Through the blue and green water
As you please.
A powerful tail that gives you
The ability to leap high, high
Above the ocean surface.
Only to plunge back in the water
With a TREMENDOUS splash.

Onion my friend, I send you
My greetings as I toss this Onion
Into the ocean.
I wish you a life full of joy and leaps
Into your blue and green world.
I bid you a happy stay
While you are in Beaufort waters,
And a safe journey
Wherever it is you go.
Your companions are always welcome.

Peace be with you Onion.
Peace be with you.
